PIVOT BEARING MAINTENANCE

One of the most important areas on the GSX style pinsetter for routine maintenance is the Pivot Bearing. This part is responsible for the raising and lowering of the sweep and the table.

A catastrophic failure of the Pivot Bearing that is responsible for the table, can lead to a major breakdown and the possibility of several parts failing. This Pivot Bearing carries the weight of the entire table and skipping the maintenance will cause it to fail.

The Pivot Bearing that lifts and lowers the sweep doesn’t carry as much weight but still needs to be maintained.

The Pivot Bearing and the attached chains will have tension on them from the weight of the sweep or table. Before starting any work on the pinsetter, follow the manufacturer’s safety procedures.

Both Pivot Bearings should have 1 drop of oil placed on the center bushing once per month. This is a great time to also inspect the condition of the chains. Chains should be wiped off with a dry rag and a light coating of Moly chain lube applied once per month.

The likelihood of the sweep Pivot Bearing failing is rare. The table Pivot Bearing can fail and below is a procedure for replacing it.

There are 2 options for replacing a pivot bearing shown below.

1. With 10 pins on the lane, lower the table onto the stroke limiter and remove power.

2. Take a photo of the Pivot Bearing to use as a reference. Use the photo to ensure that the replacement bearing is in the correct orientation and that the chain is attached in the correct hole.

3. Place a small screwdriver or hex key through the chains to prevent the chain from falling into the table tube.

4. Carefully remove the master link from the chain and the Pivot Bearing.

5. Remove the Clevis pin from the stud on the Table crank arm. Retain the pin and the associated washers for reinstallation.

6. Inspect the condition of the chain, the idler sprocket and the stud on the table crank. If the sprocket needs to be replaced there are 2 options. The OEM style or the Stike Maker Steel sprocket.

7. When replacing the Pivot Bearing, it is recommended to install a master link from the elevator chains. This link has a pin that will stop the chain from dropping into the table tube in the event of the bearing breaking.

8. Before installing the new Pivot Bearing, apply a few drops of oil to the center bushing and the table crank stud. Reinstall using the earlier photo as a reference. Remove the screwdriver or hex key that was used to retain the chain.

9. Restore power and run a few cycles to ensure correct operation.

Changing a Pivot Bearing might seem like big project at first. With a little experience, it can be a quick and easy way to keep your machines running smoothly.
